Day 42: Hamburg to Canandaigua NY

We had a cool start again today at 52F under an overcast sky and a slight NNE breeze. Today's 93-mile ride was very similar to yesterday, at least leading to our first SAG stop at Mile 30.  We traveled on smooth roads with a generous paved shoulder that coursed through a series of villages and small towns.  For the most part I rode with Tim, Michael, and Michelle today.

Early morning cloudy sky, but smooth and wide paved shoulders with very light traffic
Around Mile 13, we entered the village of East Aurora which is one of the most vibrant and clean towns we have ridden through.  Quite frankly, this beauty of East Aurora's downtown appeared to be almost too good to be true.  It offers a very interesting selection of specialty stores and restaurants, and has a "five and dime" store that spans 3-4 normal store fronts with a giant sized statue sitting on the roof and facade.  Every business was interesting.  Every store front was clean and inviting.  Most businesses had a certain "hipness" about them. I could easily have spent half a day just in the downtown area walking around, eating, shopping, etc. The East Aurora Chamber of Commerce or DDA is doing a great job here.

Community pride in East Aurora is evident as early as their gateway entrance.

Dedicated bicycle lanes on both sides of the brick paved downtown street.
Note the cleanliness from the street to the sidewalk to the full vertical extent of each store front.

Dedicated bicycle parking post in front of Vidler's large "five and dime" store.

Giant-sized figure sitting on roof ledge of Vidler's
Caricature of owner?

Appears to be an active theater with its original marquee.

Lots of specialty shops and eye candy in downtown East Aurora.

Quaint town or evidence of one of King Richard's sleeper cells?

East Aurora aside, most of the other small towns along the way looked like this going in.....

.....and looked like this going out.

Miles 30-93 were characterized by a clear blue sky and frequent hills, some with grades approaching 8% at times.
It was also during this time the NNE headwind vectors grew to 10-15 mph.

As good luck would have it, we spotted Shark's Custard with about 8 miles to go.
Shark is having a single scoop of Tim.
