Day 2: Riverside to Indio, CA

The ride from Riverside to Indio was a butt-kicking character builder.  We rode 92 miles today with temperatures peaking in the 90Fs.  On top of it, we constantly were pushing through a demoralizing 20-30 mph NE headwind.  And if that wasn't bad enough, we also were somewhat on the clock to make the cut-off times at various spots along the course so CrossRoads could ensure they could support everyone on the way to Indio.

Here are two short, poor quality videos (sorry, I'll get better) that will give you a sense of the day.  The first was taken on the approach to the start of the 6-mile climb near Mile 32.  Note I am not riding:  all the noise is from the wind and the traffic.  Yeah, we had lots of that on this road too.

This second video shows the activity of the windmill farms near Palm Springs.

Although I've ridden with most everyone at times so far, after 2 days I seem to riding mostly with or nearby two other midwesterners -- Randy Germeraad of Springfield, IL and Chuck Hardesty of St Louis, MO. Both are friendly, easy-going, and strong cyclists.

Tomorrow we ride 97 miles to cross the Mojave.  Atypical headwinds are expected again and cut-off times will be in place for group safety.  Randy, Chuck, and I have agreed to ride together, work together in a pace line, and take regular turns at the front.  Any stops we make will be quick and focused.

Congrats on a tough day. Glad to see you have found a mini-group to share the miles. Chuck is a great guy and being together really helps.
Thanks for the blog updates; I love following along.
